6th Year visit to the Leinster House

6th year Politics & Society class visit to Leinster House

The 6th year Politics and Society class from Pobalscoil visited Leinster House and Government Buildings on Friday 20th September. A small bit of history was made as not only was this the first Pobalscoil Politics & Society class to visit but also the first Politics & Society school from County Cork - the home of General Michael Collins, Chairman of the Provisional Government 1922.

The visit commenced with a comprehensive tour of Leinster House including the Dáil and Seanad led by Leinster House staff member Mr. David Coffey. This included historical features such as an original 1916 Proclamation, a portrait of female TDs this century and portraits of former Taoisigh.

The group then moved to Committee Room 2 with Oireachtas Education Officer Mr. Conor Reale.

Conor gave the group very interesting insights into how Ministers, TDs and Senators respond to media questions in the age of digital media in democracy and in particular the use of twitter as a communication platform. Students then prepared their own soundbite for the press. He also informed the group on differences in the Dáil and Committees in terms of speaking and legal ‘privilege’.

The group then elected (by a narrow majority) a Committee Chair and held robust debates on two key topics - whether schools should allow students to participate in the school strikes for Climate Action and secondly, on the issue of lowering the voting age to 16.

The students also discussed the issues around student voice in schools, for example student councils as well the importance of educating youth about voting and politics and reflected on their own learning to date.

The visit concluded with a short visit to the Dáil 100 exhibition and photographs on the steps of Leinster House. The group also briefly joined the conclusion of the Schools Climate Action Protest march at Merrion Square.
