French Exchange, a resounding success

Cead Mile Failte for Bordeaux visitors

Thirteen French students and one teacher recently arrived in Youghal in March 2019 as part of an exchange with Pobalscoil na Tríonóide. The partner school is called Lycée Francois Magendie and is based in the city of Bordeaux in France. The students and their teacher stayed in Youghal for 8 days and attended classes in Pobalscoil during the week. This is the only language exchange of its kind in Pobalscoil and is now in its second year after a successful launch in 2017.

The exchange students also participated in a wide variety of extracurricular activities. These ranged from a walking tour of historic Youghal town including the Clock Gate Tower and St. Marys Collegiate Church, a boat trip to Spike Island and a visit to Cobh Heritage Centre, a visit to Crawford Art Gallery and a guided tour of Cork city, a cinema trip and the French students even tried a poc fada, a ceili and a hearty Irish Stew as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge!

Each French student was matched with their Irish counterpart and a host family and stayed with them for the duration of the exchange. This is a superb cultural opportunity for everyone to make lifelong friends, practise speaking French and English, learn about Irish culture and of course have fun. The exchange had huge educational value and was highly rewarding for all students.

The Irish students will travel to France in October 2019 and enjoy 8 days with their partners and attend school in Bordeaux. Vive la Francophonie!

A TESTIMONY FROM TWO OF OUR 2019 EXCHANGE STUDENTS IN POBALSCOIL

The exchange is a fun learning experience where you immerse yourself within the language and the culture while living as a young person in France.

The day you go to France starts off early in the morning as you would have to arrive in Cork to catch the Aircoach to Dublin, when you arrive the teachers will allow you time to look around and get some food. You then go to where you board for the flight.

When you arrive in Bordeaux, you are met by your French partner with either one or both of their parents. Then the week starts.

You spend the rest of the night at your partner’s house and have dinner and dessert; in France they always have fruit/yoghurt or some cakes/pastries after dinner.

The next day you spend a shadow morning where you go to class with your exchange partner for half of the day. Afterwards you meet up with all the students and go for lunch in the school canteen, much like at home you get a hot meal and some dessert.

After lunch you and the rest of the students will go out and engage in different activities to improve your French listening and speaking skills.

During the weekend you spend most of it with the host family. The family could take you to different tourist attractions and would have most likely have something planned, other families would take you out of Bordeaux and to their summer houses.

On the last day your partner and their parents bring you to the airport where you meet with the other Irish students and head home. It is a fantastic week and a wonderful experience!!
